The undisputed Queen of Fado was born in Lisbon’s popular district of Alcantara in 1920. Abandoned by her mother at the age of one, she was raised by her grandmother until the financial hardships of her family took her out of school and into a series of jobs before entering the world of show business as a tango dancer. At the age of 19 she debuted her singing career alongside her sister Celeste at the prestigious Lisbon nightspot Retiro da Severa. Her reputation soon spread from the Portuguese capital to Brazil and throughout Latin America where she would tour and record extensively. Her talent lay not only in her expressive voice and dramatic presence but in her heartfelt lyrics, telling tales of poverty, hardship and despair. Despite controversy over her relations with the dictator Salazar and the temporary banning of her music following the Revolution in 1974, Amalia Rodrigues’s passing away on 6 October 1999 left the entire Lusophone world in shock and deep mourning.
